How to read these numbers
Inflation is measured by the HICP (Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices), calculated by Eurostat each month. Each figure shows how much a typical basket of goods costs more (or less) compared to the same month a year earlier. The ECB targets inflation near 2% over the medium term — enough to lubricate the economy, not enough to erode your purchasing power.
